Sea Wolf Feast Bowl
by Indigenous artists Randy Stiglitz, a member of the Coast Salish First Nation who works together with his partner Janice Morin (Cree).
This piece took over a year to be completed. Fully hand carved. Just picture the log of wood when it started and what became of it. And the work and love that went into it truly shows. From expression to depth, from posture to balance and color – it is perfect. An outstanding centerpiece, unique, impressive and very powerful.
The lid, showing the whale fin, fits tight, so precisely done. The tail of the wolf is depicted as the whale’s tail. The Sea Wolf is sitting on a natural wooden base, painted in vibrant contrast color. Wooden dowels are holding it once it’s on the base, but it can be taken off easy. Please see images. Signed by both artists. I’ll let the images speak for themselves….I’m also providing a video, please scroll all the way down.
Meaning: Sea Wolf is a unique and rarely seen subspecies of wolf, living on the outer edges of the Great Bear Rainforest and along the island dotted coastline of BC. They have adapted to life along the shoreline, swimming between islands, patrolling beaches for food and are eating almost entirely a marine based diet (salmon, seals, mussels etc.). They live exclusively at the Coast of the Pacific Northwest in BC.
The sea wolf holds deep cultural and ecological significance. The coastal wolf’s territories often overlap with protected First Nations land and marine parks. They rely heavily on the ocean. Their survival is closely linked to the health of salmon population.
The Wolf represents loyalty, strong family ties, good communication, education, understanding and intelligence. Of all animals, the Wolf has the strongest supernatural powers and is the most accomplished hunter. The Wolf is a very social and communicative creature; he uses body movement, touch and sound.
Measurements: 25” long x 12” wide x 17” high, the wooden base is 23” x 17”
