Large cedar Mask. Title: Bear Mother feeding on Salmon, by Gerry Sheena, a member of the Interior Salish Nation with many years of experience in this art. Also carving large totem poles and beautiful bowls and panels.  

We are truly honored to present such a remarkable artist. Gerry used a beautiful large solid piece of red cedar, hollowed it out and created another amazing mask.

Please have a look at the images, see how it started and how much work and craftsmanship went into it. Bear Mother has a wonderful expression, 3 little bear cubs on top, carved in great detail. Then on each side of the mask, you can see Salmon. Deep and clean carving lines, very vibrant and precise painting. Gerry chose a beautiful piece of red cedar, wonderful grain. Lots of horsehair adorning the beautiful face. A very impressive and powerful piece. 

Gerry pays a lot of attention to details. The back of the mask is also finished and clean. Signed and prepared for wall hanging at the back. 

Meaning: Indigenous artwork on the Pacific Northwest Coast often incorporates figures and animals that are related to crest symbols. Crests have been passed down through families and have varying meanings depending on the context and association with a nation, clan, or family. In oral traditions across the Northwest Coast there are many human heroes and legends. The figures are depicted in many ways. Some figures might represent a chief or shaman, while others an ancestor. Ancestors are incredibly important in Northwest Coast culture; thus, you will often see human portraits in the artwork depicting an ancestor figure.

The Bear is a symbol for power, courage, physical strength and leadership. Warriors e.g. are known to wear bear claw necklaces which meant protection. In Haida culture the Bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsman" and was treated like a high-ranking guest.
