Grandfather / Ancestor Portrait Mask by Sean Whonnock, Indigenous artist and member of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nation from Alert Bay, a small island off the Pacific Northwest Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
This mask was inspired by Sean's grandfather Gideon Whonnock. Sean carved the mask in 1997 but held onto it. It's a very special mask to him and we are honored that he brought it and shared it with us - and now with you.
Wrinkled face with so much expression. Long white hair and eyebrows, beautiful bead earrings, missing teeth, the eyes are mesmerizing, inlaid with old and authentic Abalone. Absolutely incredible craftsmanship, true Indigenous art, red cedar with wonderful grain, fully hand carved. Nice, dark patina, Images taken in sunlight.
Authentic, true and traditional Indigenous art at it’s best. Sean is so incredibly talented. He spent many months he told me, before this came to life. Adorned with white horsehair.
