Nusmata, Saunders Jarrod

Nusmata, Saunders Jarrod

Nusmata Jarrod Saunders is a member of the Nuxalk Nation. He is a third-generation artist. Born in the Nuxalk Nation (Bella Coola, Canada), he has been carving for over 20 years. Jarrod was given the traditional name 'Nusmata' by his Grandfather and master, Silyas Saunders.

Armed with an array of inventive modern resources, Jarrod has expanded his creative drive into graphic design, clothing, and stretched glicee prints with the intention of making first nation’s art accessible to more people. Having trained under multiple masters, his contemporary style is modern, colorful, and all his own. Jarrod now resides in British Columbia, (unceded WS'ANEC', Lkwungen, and Wyomilth territories).

He recently released a great tribute to the late Gord Downie by designing a glicee print on a stretched canvas, titled “In honor of Wicapi Omani, Man who walks among the stars”. The print is not only beautiful but also charitable as a big part of every print sold will go to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
