Shaw, Spence
Spence Shaw's name is liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ from the Wei Wai Kum nation.
"I have been practicing art since I was a young man, in school, I would practice in various art mediums such as charcoal and ball point pen, however martial arts pulled my attention for the last 20 years. In my mid-20’s I began having a strong pull to learn about my liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ people, however due to colonization I had limited connection to my culture. Our family had our first feast in over a hundred years in 2022 and since then my connections began to really grow. I’m beginning to seek an apprenticeship with my oldest brother Raymond Shaw. Raymond has 30+ years of experience in carving, painting, designing kwakwaka'wakw art and is a valuable member of the liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ community.
I’m finding my cultural connections to the liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ people through this apprenticeship and am beginning my kwakwaka'wakw art career"
