We are honored to welcome a new, highly talented young man to our Gallery:
Indigenous artist Spence Shaw, a member of the Wei Wai Kum Nation
Raven Mask, articulated beak, copper and abalone inlays
Absolutely superb quality and craftsmanship. You can clearly see how much Spence loves this art. He’s paying a lot of attention to details and even this early in his career, he already shows his great talent, and we are certain he has a very successful career ahead of him. He apprenticed under and credits his older brother Raymond Shaw, a very well known and accomplished artist, for teaching and mentoring him.
Spence chose a beautiful clean piece of red cedar. He inlaid the eyes with copper AND abalone. He also integrated copper into the beak. The painting is meticulously done. He chose a rich blue, added white and black while leaving enough room to show the beautiful wood. The images don't do it justice. This is a very impressive and powerful piece of native art, hand carved, hand painted.
The artist prepared the Raven for wall hanging AND he also added a stand, so it’s your choice how to display it. This raven is big enough to be worn as headdress, it's a great size and just very impressive.
Measurements: 23” long x 8” high x 9” wide
Meaning: The Raven is known to be the transformer, trickster and creator. In the Kwakwaka'wakw culture the Raven is known as the messenger of the sky and famous for being a somewhat mischievous glutton. He's always out to please himself and to have a good time. He's very adventurous. One of the many legends is telling the story of the Raven, who stole the sun
