A fantastic piece of superb - I mean truly highest quality craftsmanship by First Nation artist Rupert Jeffrey from the Gitxkan First Nation.
In the artist's words: The Salmon is represented in the seasons of fish runs up river. The Coho, the spring salmon, the king and the queen of the ocean. The Coho salmon is one of the Skeena river species. The Sun mask is a representation of the cycle of life. The main feature is the dog salmon in the mouth. This is the prince of the Skeena River salmon.
The grain of this red cedar had a grain count of 1600 years old growth. The special added gift is the yellow cedar hand carved dowels. The total mask is carved from splitting a log into selected size with my axe and then shaped before pack off to new home. Hand sawn with big chisel to block away depth, then all hand carved with 26 years of experience of working traditional cedar into masks and objects"
