Beautiful piece of authentic and traditional Indigenous art
BEAR and OWL - gorgeous Totem by Coast Salish artist Howard LaFortune Jr.
Hand carved, polished, very clean lines, strong expression, just a gorgeous piece of Indigenous Art. Please have a close look at the cedar he used. Lots of character in this piece - the grain is wonderful, showing the age of the wood. Solid piece.
Howard took a break from carving but is back, and we are very pleased and honored to present him in our native art gallery. You can clearly see that he has a lot of experience in this art. He developed his own style of carving over the years while keeping tradition and history in mind. Howard is part of a large and very well known family or artists, son of Howard LaFortune Sr. He signed the totem at the back. Just a fabulous piece.
Measurements: 17" x 6" x 5 1/2
Meaning: The Bear is a symbol for power, courage, physical strength and leadership. Warrior's e.g. are known to wear bear claw necklaces which meant protection. In Haida culture the Bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsman" and was treated like a high ranking guest. The Owl is associated with the souls of ancestors and are viewed with high respect. They symbolize wisdom, intuition and prophecies and sacred knowledge.
