Truly beautiful piece of art, fully hand carved by Indigenous artist Rupert Jeffrey from the Gitxsan Nations, Skeena River.
GRIZZLY (Smaxx) BEAR MASK
The grizzly's face has a powerful expression, please look at the teeth, detailed and deep carving. The wood was harvested in Nitinat Lake, old growth. Hand painted, one piece - the ears are not mounted on. It's been carved down to 1/2" thickness and Rupert pointed out that he used NO sandpaper for that, which takes a lot of skill and talent. Lots of curve blading and knife work. 5 coats of oil applied
Measurements: 9 1/2" x 11" x 5"
Meaning: The Bear is a symbol for power, courage, physical strength and leadership. Warriors e.g. are known to wear bear claw necklaces which meant protection. In Haida culture the Bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsman" and was treated like a high-ranking guest.
