Title: Wolf - playing in mud - by Haida artist Donavon Gates, member of the Old Massett Band from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte)
Superb quality carving. Donavon used a beautiful piece of cedar for this piece, then stained and polished it to accentuate the natural grain of the wood. The dark brown stain is depicting the mud the wolf is playing in. Donavon told me he saw a Wolf playing in mud a long time back and it just made a long-lasting memory for him, it inspired him to do this carving. It's very beautiful. The details are truly stunning. The carving lines, deep, just a very balanced piece. It's always a real pleasure to see Donavon and his artwork.
Measurements: 17" diameter, 1" thick
Meaning: The Wolf represents loyalty, strong family ties, good communication, education, understanding and intelligence. Of all land animals, the Wolf has the strongest supernatural powers and is the most accomplished hunter. The Wolf is a very social and communicative creature; he uses body movement, touch and sound.
