This is one of Charlie's early pieces of art. He just told me that he carved it in the late 70's. It's absolutely superb quality!
Beautiful cedar Thunderbird, Killer Whale and Salmon, hand carved by Indigenous artist Charles George Sr., a member of the Heiltsuk First Nations from Bella Bella.
The details are really nice, everything fully hand carved, then stained and polished. Clear carving lines, very powerful piece. The Thunderbird is shown in flight, with Killer Whale in it's claws. The Killer Whale is depicting the Moon and the Salmon in it. Made and prepared for wall hanging, hanger already attached, signed at the back and of course, guaranteed authentic just like every piece of art we are presenting.
Measurements: 39" x 10" x 1"
Meaning: The Thunderbird symbolizes supernatural power and is believed to be the dominating force behind all of nature’s doings. It’s a mythical creature and only the most prestigious and powerful Chiefs are allowed to have the Thunderbird as a crest especially among the Kwagiulth, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Coast Salish people.
