Incredibly detailed and unique piece of art from the Coast Salish Nation, authentic, hand carved, hand painted

Mask: Wolves - howling to the Moon

Hand carved wooden Mask by Coast Salish Indigenous artist Randy Stiglitz who works together with his parter Janice Morin, a member of the Cree Nation.

As always, the craftsmanship is exquisite. Please have a close look. The moon's face is NOT mounted on top, its all fully hand carved out of one solid piece of wood!! I’m showing an image from the back so you can see the knife marks and the hollowing out, this piece was a lot of work. Randy spent many many hours and added incredible details to it. Did you see all the Abalone inlays?  Lady Moon's face is truly mesmerizing. Little Mother Moon face on top. Beautifully hand painted in soft winter colors, black and blue's, adorned with cedar bark rope.

Randy works very focused and it shows. The mask is prepared for wall hanging, signed at the back.

Measurements: 16” x 15” x 7”

Meaning: The name of the January Wolf Moon is derived from wolves, which tend to howl more often in the winter months. It isn’t hard to imagine the sound of howling wolves piercing the silence and adding a sense of eerie desolation. As the first full moon of a new year rises (January 25) it is named the Wolf Moon by Native American tribes for the wolves that would howl during snowy nights, howling to communicate with their pack and to protect their territory. Howling to communicate with the moon who dictates the tides and seasons, providing food and reminding us about the unseen connection to our own spirit, worth honoring and protecting.

The Wolf represents loyalty, strong family ties, understanding and intelligence. Of all land animals, the Wolf has the strongest supernatural powers and is the most accomplished hunter. The Wolf is a very social and communicative creature.
