What a beautiful piece of true Indigenous art – superb quality!
Woodpecker Mask by Tim Paul, a member of the Hesquiaht tribe of the Nuu-chah-Nulth (Nootka) Nation, originating from Zeballos in the Esperanza Inlet in British Columbia, Canada's Pacific Northwest Coast.
It's just always such a pleasure to meet with Tim. He is truly acutely aware of the traditional culture and history of his peoples, and I can listen to him for hours once he starts telling stories. He began to work under Henry Hunt and is looking back on a 60+ year career. Please take the time to read his biography provided below, it’s so impressive and a truly interesting read.
This is one of his larger pieces, he used very clean and beautiful piece of red cedar, detailed and meticulous carving lines. Powerful expression, hand painted woodpecker design, contemporary and traditional. Just a marvelous piece. Signed at the back, prepared for wall hanging.
Measurements: 15” x 12” x 5”
Meaning: Woodpeckers are considered lucky birds and are associated with home, safety and motherly protection. They are seen as a helpful spirit which protects and guides the growth of home and family. In some tribes, woodpeckers are considered medicine birds, and woodpecker scalps and feathers have traditionally been used to adorn ceremonial objects, headdresses, and dance regalia. Woodpecker is an important clan crest in some Northwest Coast tribes and can sometimes be found carved on totem poles.
Woodpecker is intelligent and knowledgeable. She teaches us about her tireless quest to seek knowledge and discoveries, secure her well-being with perseverance, and fiercely protect her progeny. The drumming of the Woodpecker is associated with nature’s heartbeat. They embody our bond with Mother Earth.
