Incredible and masterfully carved cedar Totem (Please scroll down and look at the video>>>>)

Eagle and Bear (Elder Kinsman) with Salmon by Haida artist Donavon Gates, member of the Old Massett Band from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte), Islands on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia with relations to the Edenshaw family.

Fully hand carved, hand painted, stained, painted again, oiled and polished. So much work went into this piece. The bold copper accents drawing the viewer into its depth. Luminous mother-of-pearl inlays bring striking vitality to the gaze. The bear stands as a profound emblem of strength, courage and the enduring bonds of family. The eagle majestic presence is depicting the power through lasting love and dedication.

Please have a close look, I’m also providing a video – please scroll down and enjoy it. Donavon carved the totem out of a solid piece of yellow cedar; the eyes and wings are inlaid with large original pieces of Abalone. Donavon also added little pieces of copper on the paws of the bear and on the feat of the eagle. Outstanding quality, superb craftsmanship! None of the pieces are added on top, each one is inlaid into the wood. The totem is mounted on a large cedar base, very solid. He signed the totem underneath the base with his carved initials.

Measurements: 40” tall, 12” wide, 6” deep, base is 19” x 14”

Meaning: Eagles mate for life and are therefore also seen as a symbol of lasting love and dedication. It is told that the Eagle end their own life in despair when the mate is lost. Eagle feathers are used in the most important ceremonies, a display of respect, courage, Chieftainship and wisdom. The Eagle is the ruler of sky. The Bear is a symbol for power, courage, physical strength and leadership. Warriors e.g. are known to wear bear claw necklaces which meant protection. In Haida culture the Bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsman" and was treated like a high-ranking guest.
