Raven and Sun Transformation Mask by Rupert Jeffrey from the Gitxsan Nation, Skeena River. The Skeena River area has the most clans in Gitxsan country of tribes and clanship still to this day.

This Transformation mask, masterfully hand carved in yellow and red cedar is the creation of Gitxsan artist Rupert Jeffrey. Incredibly detailed, outstanding craftsmanship. As always, he has signed it a few times (!) with his Initials - did you see them? One signature is carved into the Leaping whale on the top ray; the second signature is on top of the Raven painted in black.

Important to notice: Rupert did not use any nails or screws, instead each ray is held by wood pegs. It was so much work and took so many hours to place and carve them so perfectly.

The top ray is depicting the Whale, right and left ray is showing the wolf, bottom ray is showing the bear. There are simply too many details to mention. Decorated with Abalone, the lining for the opening of the Raven’s beak is placed in a rectangle peg, decorated with 3 buttons and carved with wolf design, fitting perfectly the little whole underneath the sun’s face, to hold the raven’s beak when open. Also, on top of the Raven are sitting two perfectly placed wolves, like a gate, when the beak opens, a wolf is sitting on each side. I’m providing a lot of images, please have a close look.
