What a treat for every serious collector of Native Art:

This Yagis (or Undersea Monster) Transformation mask, even though it has been danced at least 9 times and was carved almost 30 years ago, is in excellent condition. The artists GEORGE HUNT Jr., assisted by his brother, PATRICK HUNT as well as TONY HUNT Jr. did a wonderful job, carving this piece for Chief Hamzid of the Danax’dax, Robert Duncan.

The Mask was finished in 1991 and since then has been danced at all family potlatch’s as well as family feasts. The Mask was part of the Tlax’s lax - Chiefs Dances/Peace dance ceremony! When the dancer enters the Bighouse he brings the reincarnation of the Chief who left through the front door and returns as the Dlug’way or treasure – a dance reserved for high ranking chiefs only.

Over the course of almost 30 years it has been used many times, and stayed in the family, Chief Hamzid was the ONLY owner of this piece and is the only one with the rights to use this at their ceremonies. It travelled with them to Bella Bella in 1993 for the CANOE GATHERING and it was also used at the opening of the Bighouse (Kwinwatsi) House of Thunder in Campbell River in 1998.

Over the years, it has been well taken care of, e.g. the copper eye brows had been replaced and painting on the inside of the mask were added over time. Sometimes it was danced with a full-body costume or just with a cedar bark skirt (costumes are not included). The buyer will receive 2 “wing-pieces” which are not part of the mask but were part of the costume at some point.
