Joseph, Brad Jr.

Brad Joseph Jr. is a member of the Squamish Nation. Born 1959, he started by learning to draw at the age of 9 years old, then picked up his first piece of wood at the age of 12.

He has now been carving for a little over 50 years, so lots of experience. He credits his late father Stanley Joseph Sr. and his older brother as his mentor and teacher. Brad is a member of a large family. He has 7 brothers, all of them are artists, 6 of them are carvers and one painter. He loves to carve yellow and red cedar.

He says that he is proud of everyone single carving he did over all those years. Brad remembers being particularly proud of helping his older brother Stanley Joseph Jr carve his totem poles. He always was inspired by watching his father and brothers.

He’s very proud to be a Squamish Nation member, he’s proud to have been taught to work with wood and to pass on his teachings to other young people over the years. He’s the father of 2 boys who he also taught carving; in the same way he was to carry on the same traditions.
