20" Round Panel Carving of a Grizzly Bear by Donavon Gates

Again, another very beautiful carving of a Grizzly Bear by Donavon Gates. This panel is adorned with lots of abalone inlays, beautifully stained to accentuate the natural grain of the wood and polished. This time Donavon used a lighter stain which brings out the deep cuts and roundings. It also accentuates the abalone and it shows clearly the very detailed carving and Donavon's love for this art - at the same time you can see the natural stain of the wood. This is highest quality craftsmanship - the details are incredible, the "rounding/doming" of the piece is exceptional, extremely deep cuts -a rare find indeed. There is no question that this is another of Donovan's master pieces of spiritual Haida art. Donovan's carvings do not just show images, they always tell traditional stories of the Haida and their related tribes like the Tlingit and Tsimshian. This particular piece of art was carved out of Basswood, also called Tilia or Linden. (Tilia is a tree native throughout most Northern Hemisphere) The round was "domed" before carving.

How the Grizzly lost his Tail: Spring was coming and the Grizzly awoke from his hibernation. Starving and still dazed he left his cave to look for food. When he came to the sea shore, the water was frozen and he observed an Eagle Ice fishing - catching Salmon. He was very successful and the Grizzly thought that this was an easy task to satisfy his hunger. Carefully he walked onto the ice under the sneering laughter of the Eagle. But he was not to be distracted and proceeded to grind a hole into the ice. The Eagle continued to taunt him, but he was not bothered. Finally he sat down in front of the hole of the ice and waited for the salmon to arrive. They did, but much to his despair, the fish was too quick and he was not able to catch one, all the while the Eagle continued to catch the fish, so many though that he threw them back into the sea. That's when the Grizzly got mad and jumped up with the intention to take the Salmon away from the Eagle. But his tail was stuck, frozen onto the ice from sitting in front of the hole for so long so when he jumped up..... That's how the Grizzly lost his tail
