What a great piece of art – hand carved, hand painted. The expression, sorrow and sadness is so powerful, only an exceptional artist with high skills and talent can master this expression. Indigenous people always created and wore ceremonial masks to connect and communicate with the spirit world, a place that played such an important role in their lives. These masks are used to celebrate life and death, show emotions and deliver messages to the creator…

What and incredible gem! You just truly don't find this exceptional quality anymore....

Northern Kwagiulth Mourning Mask

by our late friend John Livingston, adopted into the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations. Please take the time to read John’s biography which we provide below – it’s quite amazing. John signed the mask at the back

Just superb craftsmanship. The mask is carved so extremely thin and is so delicate – only a master of this art can accomplish this. I try to show the delicate carving and thinness of this piece of wood. And then please pay close attention to the painting. Very powerful. Very clean painting, strong and traditional colors. The tears of the woman are added with copper which also plays such an important role in the life and tradition of First Nations History and traditions.

Measurements: 9” x 6 ½” x 4” (23 cm x 16.5 cm x 10 cm)
