Yellow cedar dance PADDLE, depicting Orca, Seal and Salmon

by Howard LaFortune Jr., a member of the Coast Salish Nation and a large family of artists, originating from Vancouver Island, British Columbia's Pacific Northwest Coast.

Howard pays a lot of attention to details. He's drawing every design free hand and decides on the motive while he's working on a piece. So did he on this beautiful paddle, finishing the Orca whale first, then deciding to fill the space with a little seal and a vibrant red salmon. Again, very detailed carving, vibrant colors. The yellow cedar is very clean, showing one knot which truly gives it a lot of character. Just a gorgeous, highly decorative piece of Indigenous art.

Measurements: 28" x 6" x 1"

MeaningThe killer whale is a symbol for romance and harmony as Whales mate for life. The Whale is very family oriented and known to travel in large groups, never to be alone. They symbolize great luck and happiness, community and protection. They are a known to always be working together, take care of each other and to always help and protect each other. The Seal is a symbol for curiosity, creativity and imagination, they teach us to embrace our natural sense of explorations and playfulness. They can dive to incredible depths so are known to be fearless and agile creatures, very trusting and playful. The Salmon symbolizes prosperity, renewal and fertility. They are one of the most important and highest respected animals of all since they have been the primary food source from the beginning of time to the Northwest Coast First Nations.
